Appalachian Trail Angels and Hikers to Watch
As AT hikers attempt their through hike, Angels aid them on their way. Whether it is rides, snacks, water, first aid, or whole meals, all is welcome; it’s like an oasis in a desert, and it can brighten their day to be cared for.
FRESHGROUND LEAPFROG CAFE
Tim Davis, Freshground, is a Trail Angel in a white cargo van feeding hikers going NOBO (North Bound, starting in Georgia and going to Maine) concentrating on the Bubble (the hiker population almost synchronizes their start date; you can see it on a map! https://www.wherearethehikers.com/heatmap/
Freshground has made satiating hiker hunger his mission, this is his 13th year! He fundraises through Facebook & Instagram for food and kitchen supply, propane, and van maintenance. The AT is just one of the hikes he provides meals for, and separate fundraising happens.
RON’S APPALACHIAN TRAIL SHUTTLE
Ron’s Appalachian Trail Shuttle operates from the beginning of the Appalachian Trail at Springer Mountain, GA to Fontana Dam in NC, that’s 166.7 miles! I love seeing his photos of hikers under the entrance arch that are beginning their journey at Springer. All his followers get to wish them well on their journey – and sometimes there’s even a follow-up photo with a Mt Katahdin summit! He also takes pictures of the trailhead parking lots so people can see how busy it is. Not only does he post hiker updates, but he informs everyone of the weather on the trail with updates and warnings. Shuttle drivers help transport you to trail towns where you can provision up at local stores, gas stations, and outfitters; seek indoor accommodations like hostels, bed & breakfasts, and hotels; or find medical services for injuries or illnesses. Being a shuttle driver can put a lot of mileage on a vehicle, but his well maintained Toyota of 19 years is going strong with 600k miles! Congratulations Ron & Toyota! His email is on his Facebook page, but he prefers texts, the signal is better.
